Like medical health insurance plans, dental insurance plans are usually classified as either Indemnity or
managed-care plans (Dental PPO plans fit into this latter classification). The significant variations concerning
your choice will be the availibility of dental care providers, out of pocket costs and the way bills are paid out.
Typically, Indemnity plans give you a larger choice of dental care providers than managed-care programs. Indemnity
plans pay their share of the costs for covered services only after they obtain a bill (which means that you may
have to pay in advance and then get repayment from your insurance company).
Managed care plans typically maintain dental provider networks. Dentists participating in a network consent to
perform services for patients at pre-negotiated rates and often will submit the claim to the particular dental
insurance company on your behalf. In general, you'll have less paperwork and lower out-of-pocket costs using a
managed-care dental plan and a larger choice of dental practitioners with an Indemnity plan.
